How to read this list

Average rating across a whole era is a deliberately unforgiving measure, and it does not rank albums by how good they are. It ranks them by how little they drop off. A record with three all-time singles and six filler tracks scores worse here than a consistent album with no obvious peak, because the mean punishes the filler and the peak only lifts it by a fraction.

That makes the list useful for exactly one thing, which happens to be the thing you need mid-draft: it tells you which spins you can take blind. Land an era near the top and almost anything you grab is defensible. Land a weaker era and the album is likely carried by one or two songs you need to actually recognise.

It is worth knowing which direction the measure is biased in. Long albums are penalised, since twenty-track records almost always carry interludes and sequencing filler that a tight ten-track album does not. Older eras are penalised too, because ratings lean on streaming evidence that under-measures anything released before streaming was how people listened, which is discussed at length here.

So a high average is strong evidence, and a middling one is weak evidence rather than a verdict. Several records that most people would name among the best ever made sit outside the top of this table, and that is the measure behaving as designed rather than an error.
